NYSCWA President's Column - Summer 2010

It’s amazing to me how much things change.

Our most recent New York State Car Wash Association (NYSCWA) meeting in Albany on April 14 at The Clarion Hotel at The Century House was all about using social media to market your carwash. Social what? Really? Are you kidding me? Well, it seems that today’s generation uses nothing but social media like Facebook and Twitter to keep connected with their peers and to learn about products and services they desire. In fact, this generation hasn’t been to a bank, well, ever, as they use their debit and credit cards to live. We need to learn to speak their language if we want to keep up and capture them as valued customers.

Industry marketing expert, Ryan Carlson of Washideas.com, did a “virtual” meeting from the comfort of his home to our meeting space at The Century House and it went off without a hitch. It was amazing to think that he was in Minnesota speaking to our attendees in New York. His insights into this generation and the usefulness of social media were eye opening. I know that I will be changing how I market my services and thanks to Ryan, my eyes have been open wide. You can learn more about what he does by visiting washideas.com or ryan@washideas.com.

It also got me to thinking that as operators we need to make sure, no matter what type of wash we operate, that we accept credit cards and have state-of-the-art card readers to make these transactions seemless. Operating our washes as we did 10 years ago is no longer going to work. We need to change with the times. We need to become more innovative and knowledgeable about today’s generation.

Let’s Play Ball!
When you read this column our annual trip to CitiField will be history, but the memories will remain for those who attended the fun-filled event. Thanks to Mike Benmosche and his hard work, we have been able to cultivate a great annual event for members and their families. With more than 100 attendees the event continues to grow and attract operators from several of the East Coast associations. Included in the event is the fabulous CitiField Empire Party Suite which includes private viewing of the game, endless food and drink, the chance to catch up with fellow operators and the opportunity to meet some new ones in an intimate setting. It’s truly a great day on all fronts and one you should participate in if you have not yet done so. Look for some photos in the Fall issue of this magazine to document the fun.

One a final note, I’d like to encourage you all to attend the 21st Northeast Regional Carwash Convention (NRCC) in Atlantic City, October 18-20. This year we are moving the show to the Trump Taj Mahal. This venue is right on the boardwalk, includes affordable overnight accommodations and dining that is spectacular and affords our vendors the opportunity for our huge show floor where they can bring more equipment and displays to educate and inform attendees. Our keynote speaker this year will also be one for the record books. Captain Scott Shields and his rescue dog Bear were one of the first responders to the tragedy at Ground Zero after the events of 9/11. His story will move and motive you and leave you with a lasting impression. Please be sure to participate. For more information contact the NRCC office at 808/868-8590 or register on line at nrccshow.com. You’ll be glad you did! See you at the show!
