NYSCWA President's Letter - Spring 2009
Well, we finally got some wash weather and most operators saw volumes that they have not seen in five years. I think it has created a new confidence that all our hard work and effort can have positive rewards. Hopefully, we were all prepared for the volumes and our customers realize the great value of our service.
This year will be a very busy year for the New York State Car Wash Association (NYSCWA). Myself and members of the board will be working on a number of issues. Growing our member benefits is the priority of our newly formed member benefits committee which will be working to find member added benefits including health care and a new credit card processing option.
We our going to have a meeting with our lobbyist, Bill Crowell, in the near future to discuss this year’s legislation direction. Unfortunately, tax relief in any form will be impossible with the state’s current financial situation. At our last board meeting we discussed a number of issues to tackle including making driveway/parking lot washing illegal in New York State was one and labor laws were another. If you have an issue that you have concerns about please let us know at mediasolutions@nycap.rr.com or call the office at 800/287-6604.
It may be old news but Hoffman Car Washes (Tom Hoffman Jr.) prevailed against the New York State Department of Taxation in reference to cash sales at self-service in bay revenues. The Tax Tribunal agreed with Hoffman’s argument that they do not in any way assist costumers in washing their vehicles. As a result, all cash sales are exempt but we still have to collect sales tax on credit card sales.
Our spring membership meeting will be in Albany, May 13, will include a panel discussion on club plans and radio frequency identification technology as well as an update on labor compliance by a state representative.
We are once again headed to a Mets game at their new stadium in June. Watch our website for more information on that. We will have a bus leaving from Albany to make it easier many to attend this great event.
Our fall meeting will take place September 30, in the Finger Lakes’ wine country and will include a couple stops at washes as well as a few winery tours. Watch our web site, nyscwa.com, for more information.
We are also the host association this year for the Northeast Regional Carwash Convention (NRCC) in Atlantic City at the Borgata. This show has earned the reputation of being the best regional show out there. It’s full of great seminars and equipment displays, and is within driving distance for our attendees. This year marks the 20th year of the show so we will have special pricing and events to continue
to raise the bar for our attendees.
The nominating committee will be bringing a slate of officers and directors to the membership for a vote. If you are interested in serving the association please contact Walt Hartl, Tom Hoffman, Jr. or Dennis O’ Shaughnessy. Please come and share your talents with the association, you will find it very rewarding.
Have a safe and wonderful spring and let’s hope we all wash lots of cars!
