NYSCWA President's Column - Fall 2010

Wow! Where did the summer go? It’s time now to get ready for our busy season, the Northeast Regional Carwash Convention (NRCC) and other fall meetings and activities. Now with our summer staff back at college, it’s time to train our winter crew. It’s also time to button up summer projects around the wash and hopefully get ready to rock and roll this winter!

The summer in the Auburn, NY, market was warm and dry. Volumes were about the norm. We completed phase one of our upgrade of our older self-service facility in Weedsport. These upgrades included a new ceiling, wall covering, booms, bill and bill changer, coin box with credit card acceptance and in-bay dryers. We are also doing a life test with an LED commercial-grade light fixture where we placed the fixture above the underspray in our in-bay unit.

We are trying to see if it will hold up to the environment and light output at lower temperatures. If you have not seen LED lighting it’s worth the trip to your local electrical supply store. It can also save you money! It is the crispest, cleanest light you will ever see. I happen to run a Race Shop in Charlotte, NC, that had the whole building done in LEDs — very impressive.

The pros of this type of lighting are many. LED lighting is almost an “instant on,” a pretty good wattage reduction from metal halide, and a 10-year bulb life as they generate very little heat. You can actually hold your hand on a bulb that’s on!

The con is that they are about four times more expensive than metal halide, but I’m sure the price will come down as they become more readily available. I will keep you up to date on our life test.

Last year we updated our conveyor and it has been a huge success. We replaced six wheel pushers (steel to plastic) with a 100-percent composite (plastic) roller. After 14 months, it’s been a huge success with little to no wear on pushers or the conveyor deck. I would definitely recommend these rollers. Make sure you look for them at the NRCC, Oct. 18-20, at the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City (nrccshow.com).

In closing, I’d also encourage you to participate in a great program called Grace for Vets that gives away free washes to Veteran’s on Veteran’s Day. You can learn more about it on page xx. It is a really terrific way to give back and get some positive press for your wash. It’s the right thing to do.
